REGINA HELLEN LUNYOLO OKOIT

“My story is one of passion, perseverance, and the power of giving back.”

Meet Regina Hellen Lunyolo Okoit, a mother, wife, coach, mentor, educator and entrepreneur. She is a dedicated and enthusisatic person who values learning, growth and meaningful connection. Her goal is to make a positive impact wherever she is and to keep improving her skills and knowledge every day.

“My sports journey began at home playing dodgeball with my family and grew in high school through basketball, thanks to access to a school court.”

“At Makerere University, I competed in football, handball, athletics, and ultimately rugby. I became a pioneer of women’s rugby in Uganda as a player for the Thunderbirds, the team that formed the Lady Cranes in 2003.

Mentored by my late coach, Mr James Park, I transitioned into officiating, and later into coaching and mentoring young players before founding Swans Sports Club.

After completing postgraduate studies in sports management at the University of Leipzig, I moved into leadership and administration roles with the Uganda Rugby Union and the Rugby Africa Women’s Advisory Committee.

My mother and my coach, Mr James Park, were a constant source of encouragement throughout my journey.

As a child, I recall the joy of gathering with friends and classmates around the court, cheering each other on regardless of skill level. That sense of community, where competition was balanced with encouragement and mutual respect, shaped my belief that sport is not just about winning, but about teamwork, personal growth, and shared experiences.

This early exposure inspired my lifelong commitment to mentoring, coaching, and creating opportunities for young athletes to thrive both on and off the field.”

BARRIERS TO DIVERSITY & INCLUSION IN SPORT

“I see barriers such as unequal access, gender stereotypes, limited mentorship, and low visibility of women’s sport as key obstacles to diversity and inclusion. I advocate for equitable opportunities, grassroots development, mentorship, and challenging stereotypes to create inclusive environments where all athletes can thrive.

I experienced the power of diversity with the Lady Cranes XV, where players’ varied backgrounds and skills strengthened teamwork, sparked creativity, and built a supportive, inclusive environment that lifted everyone.”

“I believe media representation is key to promoting diversity in sport by inspiring participation and highlighting underrepresented voices. Authentic narratives come from amplifying these stories, involving diverse voices in storytelling, and consistently showcasing their achievements.

REGINA’S STORY

“A story of passion, perseverance, and the power of giving back. From playing dodgeball at home to pioneering women’s rugby in Uganda, my path shows that opportunities often grow from curiosity, dedication, and the courage to step into new roles. Through coaching, mentoring, and leadership, I continue to inspire young athletes, especially girls, to pursue their dreams, embrace teamwork, and lead with integrity.

The message I leave behind is that sport can transform lives, build communities, and empower the next generation to break barriers and make a lasting impact.”

“I advise young girls and women in sport to stay passionate, persistent, and open to learning. Finding mentors, embracing challenges, and stepping into new roles with confidence are paramount. Beyond skills, leading with integrity and supporting others are key, as every small step helps break barriers for women in sport.”
